Carbon Monoxide

How many times in the past year have we heard about someone getting carbon monoxide poisoning or have their home catch fire due to a natural gas leak?

How many times in the past year have we as professionals gone into a home to find severe levels of carbon monoxide or a gas leak and the customer was not aware of the possible fatal conditions?

Many of our customers were seeking medical attention because of the symptoms of headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and dizziness. These are all symptoms of CO. They were not aware the carbon monoxide in their home was coming from the fuel burning appliances never checked in their home.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas produced by the incomplete burning of solid, liquid and gaseous fuels. This can be the result of a dirty burner, insufficient air or combustion air, plugged heat exchanger or blocked flue. Mix that with a broken vent flue pipe or cracked heat exchanger and you have a severe condition that can be fatal!

The current maximum level of CO allowed in your home by ASHRAE standards is 9 PPM in an 8-hour period. According to carbon monoxide detector manufacturer standards, unsafe levels of CO are different for each person. It affects everyone at different levels. Age, size, and health are other factors that can determine the effect carbon monoxide has on them. Manufacturers recommend replacing the detector every 5-7 years as well.

My question to you is this: Do you rely on a disposable battery-operated detector that does not give you a low reading and cannot be calibrated every year? Are you going to rely on this same detector to keep you and your family safe? We do not discredit the use of such detectors, but should only be used in addition to a proper preventive maintenance program. We use only high tech equipment, which cost hundreds to thousands of dollars to keep you safe. Our equipment needs to also be calibrated on a yearly basis. How do you put all of that into a $40.00 off the shelf carbon monoxide detector?

We went to several homes over the past year to find severe carbon monoxide levels, enough to give our technicians a headache within 15 minutes, and plug in detectors were installed and present with no alarm!!

Please leave it to the trained professionals here at Jefferies Inc. to keep you and your loved ones safe!!

Heating and Cooling Efficiencies

The heating and cooling system is one of the biggest expenses in a home. It is at the center of your home as well. When your system fails, you find yourself at the mercy of high repair costs due to negligence. By choosing the right equipment, and taking the time to properly maintain them, you could find yourself saving hundreds of dollars a year.  Something as small as a loose wire can cause major damages.

Jefferies Inc. would like to help customers reduce their repair costs by completing a Residential Preventive Maintenance visit. Preventive maintenance is the best way to ensure peak performance and help avoid system failures, which lead to major repair bills. In addition, a PM visit help reduce the annual operating cost of your system.

Your heating and cooling equipment is designed to meet standards set by national agencies. It should operate safely when properly installed and maintained.

However, the unit’s performance can be greatly impacted by the individual installation and the operating environment. It is your responsibility to ensure that the equipment is being maintained. Proper maintenance is critical for your safety and the satisfactory operation of the product.

Failure to regularly service and maintain your equipment can void a manufacturers warranty. Parts normally covered under a warranty will be rejected from the manufacturers due to negligence.

Do not attempt to service the unit in any way. A qualified service technician should inspect the heating and cooling systems. We complete a very high level of training here at Jefferies Inc. and carry the proper equipment to evaluate your system.

We complete task sheets and check lists on our preventive maintenance visits. All task sheets are kept in a file here at Jefferies Inc. and can be requested at any time.
